Buteyko and Safety

Is Buteyko Breathing Safe?

In short, the answer is yes, as long as you follow the correct guidance and are aware of contra-indications. Breathing exercises can be powerful: They can result in temporary changes to breathing rate, blood pressure, heart rate, blood PH, and oxygen delivery, and so it is important to engage with the exercises in a way which is appropriate for your body and health condition.

To support you in safely practising Buteyko Breathing, here are some guidelines:

  • If you are pregnant and in your first trimester, please do not practice any of the breathing exercises. In your second trimester, you can practice gentle nose breathing and breathe light with Relaxation.

  • If you are over 60, or have any medical condition(s), including high blood pressure, heart complaints, anxiety, panic disorder, migraines, or any serious medical condition, please do not practice holding the breath for long periods of time.

  • Please do not make any changes to your medication without first consulting a doctor. Continue to keep reliever inhalers with you even if your symptoms have significantly reduced.

  • Always listen to your body during and after the exercises. Go gently and don’t push yourself. If you feel stressed, then go for a lower intensity or take a break for 60 seconds. If you are struggling with the exercises or have any questions about Buteyko then please Contact Us.

  • Please do not practice any of the exercises while driving or operating machinery.

  • It’s best not to practise Buteyko exercises with strong air hunger directly after eating. Ideally do these exercises before each meal.
